Assessments for ADHD
An accurate ADHD assessment is crucial in identifying ADHD and creating a plan to help individuals improve their functioning and reach their goals.
Understanding ADHD
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common condition that can have a significant impact on an individual’s life.
Individuals, especially children living with ADHD, often face difficulties in maintaining focus and attention, controlling impulses, and delaying gratification. These symptoms can manifest in various ways, such as forgetfulness and disorganization at school, poor handwriting, interrupting others during class, and falling behind in classwork. At home, they may show a lack of cooperation and struggle with completing tasks that require multiple steps or instructions.
Children with ADHD often struggle with focusing on tasks they find uninteresting or difficult, and may give up easily on such tasks. While some children with ADHD may exhibit hyperactivity, restlessness, excessive talking, or fidgeting, not all individuals with ADHD will display these behaviors. They tend to become highly engaged and focused on activities that are stimulating or interesting to them, such as hobbies, movies, or video games.
ADHD can also impact adults and college students, making it difficult for them to initiate activities, finish projects on time, keep their work organized, and manage their time effectively. This can lead to emotional problems, poor academic or job performance, and relationship difficulties.

Comprehensive ADHD Assessments
At Randall Symes Psychological Services, we understand the importance of a thorough and accurate assessment for individuals with ADHD. That That is why we use a variety of methods to gather information about the individual’s symptoms, medical history, and other relevant information.
One important aspect of the assessment process is parent and child interviews, where our trained professionals can gather information about the individual’s symptoms, behaviour, and functioning in different settings.
Additionally, we use parent and teacher completed child behaviour rating scales, which provide an objective measure of the individual’s behaviour and can help identify patterns of behaviour that are persistent, pervasive, and interfere with daily functioning.
We also utilize teacher report measures, which allow us to gain insight into the school staffs perspective on the child’s behavior and functioning. A review of prior school and medical records is also an important step in the assessment process to gather information about the individual’s history, any previous evaluations, and treatment plans. An evaluation of intellectual function and academic achievement is utilized to help rule out any other variables that may affect the person’s independence.
The Assessment Outcome
The outcome of an assessment is a detailed report that includes test results, diagnostic impressions, and relevant recommendations. This report will be used to create a plan to improve functioning and help the individual reach their goals.
If the assessment indicates the presence of ADHD and/or a learning disability, then strategies and accommodations can be identified that can help reduce obstacles to success in school, post-secondary education or in the workplace. This can include identifying accommodations such as extra time on exams or advocating for reasonable accommodations in the workplace.
